½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
1 cup sour milk (1 cup of milk with 2 tablespoons of white or cider vinegar added)
Preheat oven to 350. Grease and lightly flour 2 round cake pans.
Cream together shortening and sugar. Beat in eggs, one at a time, beat until light and fluffy. Stir in 1 cup of apple butter.
Sift together the dry ingredients. Add flour mixture alternately with the sour milk. Turn batter into cake pans. Bake for 30 –35 minutes. Cool 10 minutes, remove from pans and allow to cool thoroughly.
Spread Apple Butter as frosting on the layers or make cake frosting. Then spread apple butter between the layers and cover the whole cake with rich frosting. Swirl some apple butter into the top frosting for marbled effect.
