Making Memories: Birthday Parties on the Farm

by Tannwen Mount

It is spring on the farm: the season we have been waiting for after a long, cold winter. It is especially wonderful for me to see all of our youngest visitors emerging and enjoying the farm.  The turn of weather has also brought birthday party season, a time for families to make special memories on the farm. We are thankful to be able to welcome everyone to celebrate their children’s special day with us.

We first started hosting birthday parties at Terhune Orchards when I was in my early teens (maybe 11?). My neighbor Amy Sargent and I would orchestrate party games and pony rides with my horse Tom. From a young age I enjoyed coordinating the party with the parents. It was my first foray into the world of business.  I remember vividly having to be very brave while collecting feathers for one of our games in the pasture, as we had a big cow back then who liked to chase us.

Well, I got older, went off to college, and then moved to California. My mom Pam likes to tell the story that she thought, since I was organizing all these birthday parties as a teenager, how complicated could it be? Needless to say, Terhune Orchards took a pause on hosting parties until I returned to the farm full-time, now over 15 years ago. Now we are back in full swing of birthday parties.

It has now come full circle for the next generation as well. My own children (my son pictured on the pony, to the right) and my nieces have loved having their birthday parties at the farm. My cousin’s kids are so excited to have celebrated their birthdays at the farm, too. We hope you can join the Mount family in our tradition and make memories with us.

While I might not be leading the pony or pin the tail on the donkey this year, this  season we do have some fun new additions.  Birthday guests will enjoy a special reserved party area and access to our children’s playhouses – Little Tots Farm Store and Junior Mechanic’s Workshop. Every party is complete with fresh apple cider donuts and apple cider.  Young ones will have a blast feeding our barnyard animal friends, playing in the barnyard play area, and taking the pedal tractors for a spin. Pony rides, wagon rides, and special garden story-time and seed planting are available for an additional charge. Each child takes home happy memories and a Terhune Orchards coloring book.

Spring and summer are the perfect time of year for an outdoor party on the farm. Enjoy the fresh open air and come celebrate your special day with us at Terhune!
